Finding and opening the doors, dealing with the gap between the train and platform and getting aboard can all be challenges for people with sight loss
Once someone has reached the correct platform and identified the train they must find the doors and get on. Predicting where the doors will be, finding them, finding the button to open them and climbing up onto the train can all be difficult and sometimes dangerous for people with vision impairment. Getting off the train can be even more stressful with greater time pressure and a step into the unknown down to the platform.
Implications:
Getting on and off trains is a stressful and difficult process for many people with sight loss which is part of the reason so many need assistance to use the railways.
Opportunities:
Combinations of small design changes to trains and stations and digital technology could reduce much of the uncertainty around boarding and getting off trains. This could significantly reduce the difficulty, stress and danger associated with using trains for people with vision impairment.
