Different layouts of bus stops have a bearing on how easy they are to locate
The first step to catching a bus is locating the stop. Bus stops that have a distinctive tactile profile and are positioned on the kerb line are easier to find than those in other configurations. Where different bus stops are close together finding the correct one can be particularly difficult, as can working out that a bus stop has been moved.
Implications:
Making bust stops easier to find and identify could make bus travel much easier for people with sight loss.
Opportunities:
With near field technology (especially Bluetooth 4) now supported on the majority of smartphones it’s inclusion in bus stops much could make them easier for people with sight loss to locate and identify using their existing pieces of technology.
Better and more consistent design and positioning of bus stops could make them easier to locate and identify for people with sight loss without resorting to technology.
